2011 Marks Year Of Growth For Penn Color

December 2011

2011 Marks Year Of Growth For Penn Color

While many companies struggled this past year, one local company completed two major plant expansions and is looking to extend its market reach through acquisition and/or international expansion.

Penn Color, a leading manufacturer of color and additive concentrates, headquartered in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, has opened a new 52,000 square foot plant in Milton , Wisconsin and a new masterbatch manufacturing facility in Venray, The Netherlands.

“We have two new plants and lots of room to grow. We’re looking to take market share through internal growth, but we’re also looking for acquisition candidates,” states Bob Kaminski, thermoplastics industry manager for Penn Color,

The new $9 million plant in Milton Wisconsin employs 15-20 people and operates six extrusion lines. The site can be expanded to at least 150,000 square feet and was in full production by July, according to Kaminski. “We plan to double the number of employees over the next four years.”

The Venray, Netherlands site which produces Penn Color’s water based ink and coating products, was expanded to roughly 70,000 square feet to include the manufacture of thermoplastic color masterbatches. The site will produce color masterbatches that are sold to companies in the plastic industry, which primarily manufacture packaging for consumer food, household chemicals, medical, and personal care. This expansion was completed in February.

Penn Color has invested both time and resources into becoming a more earth-friendly company by developing initiatives that have resulted in a number of reductions in energy use and waste disposal.
Both new plants have been designed with an emphasis on energy conservation – preserving and protecting our natural resources.

In the Netherlands plant, residual heat generated during the extrusion process is being captured and reused. Normally, as the water in the cooling baths heats up, energy is spent to circulate this water through a heat exchanger in order to cool it back down.  In the new plant, this hot water is circulated through the floor to provide heating for the offices and laboratory.
“The Milton plant was designed to have energy efficient lighting with motion controls in the warehouse, to compliment the natural lighting from the windows that are installed along the east and west sides of the building,” said Tom Cramer, General Manager for Penn Color. Cramer further stated, “The equipment for production and the laboratories are all new and the latest energy efficient models available”.

Penn Color is a privately held company with manufacturing facilities in the U.S., Europe, India and sales offices in Asia. The company has 600 employees worldwide with corporate headquarters located in Doylestown, PA.

Penn Color: Dutch Treat:

New Environmentally Friendly Color Masterbatch Facility Opens In Netherlands

Penn Color, a leading manufacturer of color and additive concentrates, headquartered in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, has opened a new masterbatch manufacturing facility in Venray, The Netherlands.  An original structure, which manufactured Penn Color’s water based ink and coating products, was expanded to roughly 70,000 square feet to include the manufacture of thermoplastic color masterbatches. The site will produce color masterbatches that are sold to companies in the plastic industry, which primarily manufacture packaging for consumer food, household chemicals, medical, and personal care.

The plant has multiple production lines including a fully staffed color matching laboratory.  The laboratory is designed to formulate custom color matches and provide technical support to the European customer base.

The new plant is not just unique in what if offers, but in how it was designed. Emphasis on energy conservation – preserving and protecting our natural resources – is key. According to Cees Roeleveld, Managing Director of Penn Color, Inc’s Netherlands Operation, “one of the most innovative methods being used is found in the plant’s heating system.  Heat generated during the extrusion process is being used to heat both the new and existing buildings. Normally, as the water in the cooling baths heats up, energy is spent to circulate this water through a heat exchanger in order to cool it back down.  In the new plant, this hot water is circulated through the floor to provide heating for the offices and laboratory.  Chilled water then returns to the water bath using very little energy, and will save up to 1.8 million ft3 of natural gas annually.”

Penn Color has invested both time and resources into becoming a more earth-friendly company by developing initiatives that have resulted in a number of reductions in energy use and waste disposal. The new masterbatch manufacturing facility in the Netherlands is just one more example of why “green” is Penn Color’s favorite color.

Hatboro Federal Savings Donates $25,000 to Warwick Fire Company No.1

JAMISON, PA–Hatboro Federal Savings recently donated $25,000 to the Warwick Township Volunteer Fire Company No.1 for the organization’s $2 million Capital Campaign for the construction of a new and modern firehouse.

“We are proud to step up and support this 100% volunteer community fire company whose dedicated members put their lives on the line to protect our citizens and property on a daily basis,” says Hatboro Federal President and CEO Joseph J. Tryon. “Giving assistance to such a critically needed organization is part of what being a community bank is all about.”

The current facility, located at 2390 York Road in Jamison, is almost 50 years old and the bank’s donation will help Warwick construct a new building enabling them to meet all necessary National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards.

“When we moved into our current building, we were serving fewer than 2,000 residents, and now we serve more than 14,000,” says Fire Company President Philip Ramos. “Our township is 11 square miles with a high density population of single family homes, industrial parks, farms and a busy shopping center. We need the best vehicles, equipment and space to accommodate the community’s needs.”

The Warwick Township Fire Company members responded to almost 300 calls in 2010, volunteering more than 4,600 hours of their time. Their services include responding to alarms, training drills, traffic control for emergencies and community events as well as fire protection education for area schools.

Fire Chief Robert Weber says, “Although Hatboro Federal’s Jamison Branch is a relatively new Warwick Township neighbor, the staff and management have proven to be generous and supportive, and we are truly thankful for their help with our modernization efforts.”

For more information about the Warwick Fire Company’s services and capital campaign, call 215.768.0861, or log on to www.warwickfd.com.

Hatboro Federal Savings, one of Bucks and Montgomery Counties’ leading community banks, was chartered by the Federal Home Loan Bank Board in February 1941, and has current assets of $526 million.

Consumers’ Checkbook readers gave Hatboro Federal a perfect score of 100% for customer service in its October 2011 edition, and the bank was awarded the Pennsylvania Association of Community Bankers (PACB) 2011 Community Service Award in August.  Headquartered at 221 S.
